NBCUniversal and U-Next forge multi-platform entertainment alliance in Japan

NBCUniversal and U-Next have signed a long-term partnership that will bring the Universal+ streaming service to Japan and link the two firms’ content, theme-park and global distribution efforts.

NBCUniversal and U-Next announced a strategic, long-term partnership that will embed the Universal+ streaming brand within Japan’s second-largest VOD platform. The service is set to debut on U-Next in October 2026, delivering NBCUniversal’s extensive library—including franchises like “Minions,” “Fast & Furious,” and upcoming theatrical releases such as Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey.” From spring 2027, U-Next will also provide near-simultaneous access to major cinema releases and new NBCUniversal series on an exclusive basis.

A second pillar of the deal focuses on joint live-event initiatives tied to Universal Studios Japan’s 25th anniversary, encompassing music shows, exclusive park experiences and co-produced video content. The third component opens distribution channels for Japanese dramas, anime and U-Next originals through Peacock in the United States and Universal+ in Latin America, with plans to expand further. NBCUniversal’s Chris Taylor and U-Next president Tsutsumi Tenshin said the collaboration aims to create a unified entertainment ecosystem that blends streaming, physical experiences and global reach.

Why it matters

The alliance expands premium global content to Japanese viewers and gives Japanese media new routes to international audiences.
