NC State dismisses head coach Dave Doeren after 14-season tenure

NC State announced the termination of football coach Dave Doeren following a 31-28 loss to Stanford, leaving the team 3-4 overall.

North Carolina State confirmed on Saturday that it has fired head football coach Dave Doeren after a 14-year stint that began in 2013. The decision came a day after the Wolfpack lost to Stanford 31-28, dropping their record to 3-4. One outlet director Boo Corrigan expressed gratitude for Doeren's contributions and announced an immediate national search for his replacement.

Doeren, who turned a 3-9 debut season into a regular bowl participant with 11 appearances in 13 full seasons, acknowledged his role in the team's poor performance, especially a 1-3 ACC record. Todd Goebbel, the running backs and special teams coordinator, will serve as interim head coach until a permanent hire, expected to be announced before the Halloween game against California. Doeren becomes the second coach dismissed this season, following Maryland's separation from Mike Locksley.

Why it matters

The firing signals a major shift for NC State football and impacts the program's future direction.
