NCERT unveils Class 9 social science textbook linking taxes to nation-building
The National Council of Educational Research and Training released a new Class 9 social science book that ties personal income-tax concepts to civic duties and national development.
NCERT launched the second part of its Class 9 social science textbook, ‘Understanding Society: India and Beyond’, featuring chapters that blend personal finance, taxation and entrepreneurship with themes of governance and nation-building. A dedicated chapter walks students through current income-tax slabs, emphasizing timely, honest tax payment as a citizen’s duty that fuels development, and cites schemes like Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY for low-income health protection.
Entrepreneurship is illustrated through the growth of Lijjat Papad and the rise of Padma Bhushan hotelier Mohan Singh Oberoi, while also highlighting the historic Chettiar trading networks. The political science section links ancient symbols such as the Sengol and mottos from the Upanishads to contemporary institutions, using the National Education Policy 2020 as a case study of evidence-based policymaking and referencing Khelo Bharat Niti 2025 to show sport’s role in nation-building. The book outlines six business contributions, from job creation to corporate social responsibility, and aligns startup growth with the Viksit Bharat 2047 and Atmanirbhar Bharat visions.
