Nearly 1,000 arrests linked to high school protests in southern France, mostly minors

Authorities in the South zone of France have detained 959 individuals during recent high school demonstrations, with over 84% being underage.

The defence and security zone of the South, encompassing 21 departments across Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, Occitanie and Corsica, released a judicial overview of arrests linked to recent high school protests. The data indicate that 959 people have been detained, with 813 of them being minors, accounting for over 84% of all arrests. A striking 668 of the detainees are identified as first-time offenders.

The offenses cited include provoking crowds, assaulting law-enforcement officers, intentional vandalism, participation in gatherings and acts of rebellion. These figures illustrate the scale of legal actions taken in response to the student movements across the three regions.

Why it matters

The high proportion of minors among those arrested highlights growing tensions between French youth protests and law-enforcement responses.
