Nearly 100 offenses recorded during Erfurt AfD congress blockade, only a dozen labeled left-extremist

During the early-July blockade of the AfD’s federal congress in Erfurt, authorities logged 94 offenses, but merely twelve were classified as left-extremist.

In early July, a left-wing blockade of the AfD’s federal party congress in Erfurt generated a tally of 94 criminal offenses and nine regulatory breaches, according to the Thuringian interior ministry. Of those, just twelve were officially linked to left-extremist motives, with two placed in a generic "other" category. The ministry confirmed that no suspects have been detained so far.

Incidents such as the assault on one outlet's reporting team, initially described as possibly left-motivated, were ultimately not classified as politically driven. Additionally, four cases involving the use of symbols of banned organisations were not marked as extremist. AfD parliamentary spokesman Ringo Mühlmann criticized the lack of political categorisation, arguing it undermines public trust in security reporting.

Why it matters

The discrepancy between the number of offenses and their political classification raises questions about how protest-related violence is recorded and addressed.
