Nearly 400 Early Ordovician fossils unveil diverse polar marine life in France

Scientists have uncovered close to 400 fossils in southern France that reveal a rich marine community living near the South Pole 470 million years ago.

More than 400 specimens collected near the village of Cabrières have been catalogued in the Monceret collection at the University of Lyon, forming the newly described Cabrières Biota. The Early Ordovician site preserves a surprisingly varied community, with soft-tissue details such as gut remnants in hyoliths and worms, and intricate ornamentation on arthropod fragments. Sponges and branching algae together account for about a quarter of the fossils, while trilobites, molluscs, brachiopods and cnidarians also feature prominently.

Unusual armoured lobopodians, typically linked to Cambrian faunas, indicate that some Cambrian lineages persisted into the Ordovician. The scarcity of echinoderms and the dominance of algae-rich assemblages suggest that polar waters may have acted as refuges for diverse life during the unusually warm Early Ordovician world.

Why it matters

The discovery fills a major gap in our knowledge of ancient polar ecosystems and informs how early marine life responded to warm climates.
