Nearly half of UK workers add a nightly ‘second shift’ for side projects

A poll of 2,000 British adults shows that 49% regularly pursue side hustles after work, adding about 214 extra hours a year.

Research commissioned by Samsung reveals that almost half of British adults now work a ‘second shift’ after their regular job, logging roughly 214 additional hours per year. Forty-nine percent engage in side hustles at least once a week, and 14% do so daily from Monday to Friday, averaging four extra hours each week. While side gigs are the primary driver, 32% pursue new skills for personal interest and 23% for career development, with millennials leading the latter.

London tops the list of hustle hubs, followed by Manchester, Bristol, Newcastle and Leicester. Participants hope the evening work will grant greater independence, open new career paths, or eventually replace their main job, though they face challenges like finding time and maintaining energy. Technology such as online tutorials and task-management apps supports these efforts.

Why it matters

The rise of after-hours side work signals shifting employment patterns and growing demand for flexible income streams in the UK.
