Nearly One in Three Pakistani Adults Face Diagnosable Mental Disorders, Survey Finds

A nationwide mental health survey in Pakistan reveals that about 32% of adults currently have a diagnosable mental or behavioural disorder.

Pakistan's first nationally representative mental health survey, conducted from 2018 to 2022, involved nearly 18,000 adults from every province and is described as the most reliable data on the issue to date. The findings show that 32% of adults are currently affected by a mental or behavioural disorder, and 38% have faced such a condition during their lifetime. One in five respondents met criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder, and more than one in ten were identified as having depression.

The study also highlighted stark social disparities, with higher rates among older people, those with limited education or income, the unemployed, and individuals who are widowed, divorced or separated. Researchers say the data will guide policymakers in allocating resources, expanding services, and reducing stigma around mental illness.

Why it matters

The data provides Pakistan's first clear picture of mental health needs, guiding policy and resource allocation.
