Negeri Sembilan opposition leader protests unexplained postponement of state assembly session
Opposition MLA J Arul Kumar criticised the sudden delay of a State Assembly meeting, saying officials gave no formal notice.
During a press conference outside Wisma Negeri in Seremban, opposition MLA J Arul Kumar highlighted that the e-Dewan website continued to show the assembly session as planned, yet the meeting was not held when members gathered. He said the lack of written or portal notification violated procedural norms and that the assembly is the proper venue for raising constituents' concerns. Kumar suggested the postponement might be related to the fact that no executive council members have been appointed since the election, leaving the chief minister to manage all portfolios alone.
He warned that without a functional exco, the chief minister cannot adequately answer questions from the 35 assembly members. Kumar urged the state government to issue an official notice and reconvene the session promptly, without waiting for the upcoming budget presentation. Earlier, Chief Minister Ismail Lasim had said the session would be pushed to the end of the next month to allow more time for budget preparation.
Why it matters
The delay hampers legislators' ability to scrutinise the state government and address constituents' issues.
