Neighbours rescue six children from Yangebup house fire, adult charged

Before 8 p.m. on Friday, a blaze ignited in a Yangebup home after a rug caught fire on a stove, prompting residents to act quickly. Michelle and her son Joel, along with another neighbour, used a garden hose to fight the fire and entered the house to retrieve six children left unattended. All the children were hospitalized for observation but suffered no injuries, while Joel and the additional neighbour were taken to hospital for treatment.
Authorities determined the fire was accidental. A 38-year-old woman from Yangebup has been charged with failing to protect the children from harm and is scheduled to appear in court shortly. The Department of Communities, which oversees child-protection investigations, declined to comment on the specifics of the case.
