Nepal receives $20 million from Loss and Damage Fund, awaits flood aid decision
Nepal has been approved for US$20 million under the Loss and Damage Fund, while a separate emergency request for flood relief remains pending.
Under the Barbados Implementation Modalities of the Loss and Damage Fund, Nepal secured a US$20 million grant, confirmed by Maheshwar Dhakal, the climate change focal point at the Ministry of Forests and Environment. The fund, which holds US$342 million in deposits, will transfer the money once the Alternative Energy Promotion Centre incorporates reviewers' feedback. Nepal had submitted three proposals earlier in the year, and the approved amount could help address the impacts of the August 26 Bhotekoshi flood.
An urgent appeal filed on August 31 seeks further financing for flood response, and the FRLD board is expected to rule on it soon. The appeal has received backing from Asian, African, Latin American, least-developed and small-island country groups, which have urged developed-country members to convene a meeting promptly. Board members from small island states and the Latin America and Caribbean group have also written in support of Nepal's request.
