Nepal seeks Indian and Chinese bridges to restore flood-damaged roads and links
Nepal is mobilising to replace bridges and reopen roads destroyed by late-August floods, with temporary structures arriving from India and China.
Flash floods on August 26, caused by an ice-rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border, have claimed 1,356 lives and left 4,994 people missing, according to one outlet Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority. The disaster wiped out 41 motorable bridges between Rasuwa and Chitwan and damaged several key road connections, isolating districts such as Nuwakot and Dhading. Nepal has appealed to both India and China for temporary Bailey bridges; China has dispatched two 100-metre Bailey bridges to the Korala crossing in Mustang, and India has offered similar assistance.
The Department of Roads estimates infrastructure damage at one outlet 30 billion and total reconstruction costs around one outlet 50 billion, while working to clear washed-away road sections for bridge installation. The Nepali Army is also deploying an Acrow bridge at Devighat, and officials note transport challenges because many access roads remain destroyed.
