NetBSD 11 released with 64-bit RISC-V, enhanced Linux compatibility and sub-10 ms microVM boots
The NetBSD project unveiled version 11.0, adding 64-bit RISC-V support, broader Linux syscall compatibility and a microVM kernel that starts in roughly ten milliseconds.
NetBSD's eleventh major release, version 11.0, was rolled out at the end of July, following a two-year gap since the 30th-anniversary launch of version 10.0. The new edition supports nine Tier I architectures—including x86-32, x86-64, Arm32, Arm64, MIPS and PowerPC—and adds 52 Tier II platforms, notably 64-bit RISC-V and a virt68k port for Motorola 68000 under QEMU. Enhanced POSIX.1-2024 and C23 compliance, plus better Linux system-call compatibility, make it easier to run Linux binaries.
A dedicated microVM kernel can boot both 32-bit and 64-bit x86 guests in roughly ten milliseconds on hardware from around 2020. Additional improvements cover Xen integration, QEMU support, early Snapdragon X Elite compatibility, and an upgraded npf firewall. The OS continues to provide a lightweight LXDE desktop and optional environments like KDE Plasma, MATE and GNOME, though users must handle manual configuration and rely on open-source drivers. NetBSD remains a versatile, general-purpose system favored by projects such as SDF and the SmolBSD community for server and lightweight VM use cases.
