Netflix overtakes private French producers, poised to lead overall by 2030

Netflix became the top private financer of French audiovisual and film production in 2025 and is expected to become the leading financer overall by 2030, according to the head of the media regulator.

In 2025 Netflix emerged as the leading private source of funding for French audiovisual and cinematic productions, according to regulator Martin Ajdari. While France Télévisions continues to invest the most overall, and Canal+ stays the top single cinema investor, streaming services collectively contributed a larger portion of the €1.64 billion total spend. Ajdari projected that Netflix will become the top financer of all French creation by 2030.

He noted that the growing share of streaming money—now over 40 % of the total—may lead to fewer shooting hours, fewer projects and less genre variety compared with traditional broadcasters. The regulator praised the inclusion of streaming actors in France's cultural exception but urged continued backing of France Télévisions and suggested that YouTube be brought into the financing scheme as well.

Why it matters

The shift shows streaming giants reshaping funding for French media, affecting production volume and cultural diversity.
