Netflix's GTA 6 Extended Look Becomes Platform's Top-Viewed Title with 31.1 Million Plays

Netflix’s 27-minute “Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look” amassed 31.1 million views in four days, topping the service’s weekly Top 10 list.

Netflix’s exclusive 27-minute “Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look” debuted on Thursday, Aug. 27 at 3 p.m. ET and quickly became the streaming platform’s most-watched title for the week, gathering 31.1 million views by Sunday, Aug. 30. The special, listed under the English-language film category, topped the weekly Top 10 rankings in 87 of the 93 countries Netflix monitors. It features in-game footage from PlayStation 5, highlighting the characters Jason and Lucia as they navigate a fictionalized Vice City and offering a preview of the game’s narrative.

Rockstar Games later uploaded the same video to YouTube, where it had accumulated 17 million views. Netflix’s view-count methodology differs from YouTube’s, counting a household once regardless of repeats, while YouTube registers any playback start as a view. “The Whisper Man” held the runner-up spot on the English-language film list with 23.2 million views, while the top TV documentary was “Death of the Pastor’s Wife” at 19 million views.

Why it matters

The record viewership shows strong consumer interest in video-game content on streaming platforms, influencing future entertainment strategies.
