Netherlands to Deploy Groningen AI Supercomputer to Reduce Reliance on Foreign Tech

A new AI supercomputer will be built on the University of Groningen campus, with delivery expected in 2027 and use beginning in 2028. The Dutch cabinet, led by cabinet-Schoof, views the system as a cornerstone of an “AI factory” that brings together entrepreneurs, researchers and government bodies to develop and test artificial-intelligence technologies, thereby strengthening the national knowledge economy. Officials say the move is designed to reduce the Netherlands’ reliance on AI services from the United States and China.

An expert centre has already opened, and the Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen intends to run intensive analyses of sensor data from vulnerable newborns, citing the high cost of commercial AI compute. The initiative aligns with a broader European push for AI gigafactories, though the Netherlands opted for a smaller-scale approach after declining to join the EU-wide scheme.
