Nets owner Joe Tsai says Knicks title won’t alter Brooklyn’s rebuilding strategy

Joe Tsai admitted the Knicks' championship was disappointing for Brooklyn fans but insisted it will not change the Nets' rebuilding plan.

In a recent interview, Nets owner Joe Tsai said the Knicks' NBA championship in the same city was an embarrassing feeling for Brooklyn supporters, but he will not let it affect the team's rebuilding roadmap, which he believes is on a positive path. Tsai referenced past attempts to assemble a championship roster—signing Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving in 2019 and acquiring James Harden in 2021—only to be thwarted by injuries and a 2021 Eastern Conference semifinal loss, followed by two first-round defeats.

Since then, the franchise has pivoted toward developing young talent, highlighted by recent draft selections Mikel Brown Jr. and Egor Dëmin, and the signing of former Knick Julius Randle to partner with Michael Porter Jr. under head coach Jordi Fernández. General manager Sean Marks said the Nets control their own destiny, while CFO Peter Stern noted the Knicks' success could revive broader interest in basketball.

Why it matters

The Knicks' win reshapes New York's basketball dynamics, influencing the Nets' rebuilding strategy.
