New book challenges police findings in Örebro school attack investigation

Journalist Mattias Beijmo argues that the police report on the Örebro school attack omitted key digital evidence and motives.

The police investigation into the Örebro school attack was released three months after the incident, stating that the shooter, Rickard Andersson, acted solely out of a desire to end his own life and not for ideological reasons. Mattias Beijmo’s new book, “R - Massmordet på Risbergska,” claims the investigation ignored several digital traces, including Andersson’s Telegram and Rumble accounts and a Google Translate query made two days before the attack.

The author also highlights that forensic analysts found an encrypted virtual machine copy of a computer, whose files were emailed shortly before the event, yet no effort was made to decrypt them. Additionally, the phones of the victim’s relatives were never examined, and the report fails to address Andersson’s interaction with a far-right newspaper, which could suggest a political motive. Beijmo suggests that the police may have downplayed ideological factors to avoid potential repercussions for Sweden.

Why it matters

The book raises doubts about the completeness of the official investigation, which could affect public trust and future policy on school security.
