New Ceramic Fuel Promises Safer, Faster Nuclear Power Expansion

Standard Nuclear is scaling up production of TRISO ceramic fuel, which can prevent overheating in reactors and is being sold to small-reactor developers and the U.S. Army.

Standard Nuclear, led by nuclear engineer Kurt Terrani, is preparing to mass-produce TRISO fuel, a ceramic-encapsulated uranium product that stays cool without continuous water cooling and cannot melt. This technology addresses the historic safety concerns that forced reactors into massive concrete containment structures. The company, which went public in July, has secured a metric-ton supply deal with Antora Energy and plans to increase deliveries to as much as eight metric tons by 2035, following earlier contracts with Radiant Industries and the U.S. Army for use in small reactors.

At its latest earnings call, Standard disclosed a contract backlog of $576.9 million, reflecting growing interest as the current administration promotes the rollout of small modular reactors that are cheaper and quicker to build. Terrani asserts that Standard will be the leading global source of TRISO, eyeing applications in defense, grid-connected microreactors, maritime shipping, and even space missions. He emphasizes that the fuel’s inherent safety could remove the reliance on heavy concrete and steel containment, making nuclear power a more attractive carbon-free option.
