New Climate Study Links Bronze Age Collapse to Prolonged Drought and Modern Risks

Researchers at Stockholm University have traced a centuries-long drying trend and an abrupt Atlantic climate cycle to the severe drought that coincided with the Late Bronze Age collapse.

A team led by Katherine Power at Stockholm University analyzed natural archives such as plant spores and cave deposits, then used a global super-computer model to map climate conditions across the Mediterranean over millennia. Their findings reveal that a millennial-scale decline in the West African monsoon turned the Sahara into desert, cutting moisture supply to the region. Superimposed on this trend was a rapid, Atlantic-originating drought episode, together producing severe water shortages that may have driven the migrations known as the Sea Peoples.

Archaeologists like Eric H. Cline note that drought and disease formed a cascade of crises that toppled Bronze Age societies. The researchers warn that similar patterns of alternating wet and dry periods are now occurring under anthropogenic climate change, threatening modern agriculture and water resources. The work underscores how gradual environmental stress can push civilizations past a tipping point.
