New Democracy MP Sirigos claims Greece yielded to Turkey over Kaso cable surveys

ND MP and international law professor Aggelos Sirigos said Greece backed down during two Turkish naval incidents that halted subsea cable research near Kaso, contradicting the government's position.

During a televised interview, ND lawmaker Aggelos Sirigos asserted that Greece retreated from its stance after two Turkish naval actions in July and November 2024 prevented further subsea investigations for the electricity cable linking Greece and Cyprus near Kaso. He said the incidents demonstrated a failure to assert sovereign rights under international law. The claim directly opposes statements from Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Foreign Minister Pavlos Marinakis, who insisted the project was completed without any Turkish interference.

Opposition figures from the Greek Left Unity and PASOK-Change also condemned the government's narrative, questioning its patriotism and calling for a new national direction. Government spokespeople, including Pausanias Papageorgiou of ELAS and Defence Ministry deputy head Kateryna Berdou, labeled Sirigos' comments as misleading. The dispute highlights ongoing tensions over maritime rights in the Eastern Mediterranean.
