New director flags staff shortages and dilapidated facilities at Nyírő psychiatric institute

Nyírő Gyula Országos Pszichiátriai és Addiktológiai Intézet's new chief executive highlighted a lack of psychiatrists and poor building conditions during her initial assessment.

Váradi Enikő, the newly appointed director of Nyírő Gyula Országos Pszichiátriai és Addiktológiai Intézet, has identified critical challenges in the facility's operation. During her first weeks she toured the wards, noting that the buildings are in very bad condition, which forced a reorganization of patient units. A pronounced shortage of psychiatrist specialists is hampering service delivery, prompting a focus on stabilising acute care and expanding daytime treatment.

The institute recently experienced a leadership crisis, with more than 500 psychiatrists demanding the removal of former director Ézsi Robin, leading to 19 doctors resigning and Robin eventually leaving voluntarily. The National Hospital Directorate had opened the director position earlier in the year, and Váradi has now taken up the role.
