New Education Freedom Tax Credit Aims to Boost Charitable School Funding Starting 2027

A federal Education Freedom Tax Credit, effective Jan. 1 2027, will let taxpayers claim credits for contributions to approved scholarship organizations, targeting billions of dollars for K-12 support.

As families prepare for the new school year, they are expected to spend more than $43 billion on supplies and services, reflecting deep belief in education’s role in future success. Yet a recent poll shows 62% of Americans think K-12 education is on the wrong track. To address this gap, the Education Freedom Tax Credit will launch on Jan. 1 2027, allowing taxpayers to claim a credit for donations to approved Scholarship Granting Organizations.

The credit does not reduce state education funding and is already adopted by 30 states. Projections suggest that participation by just 15% of taxpayers could produce roughly $12 billion annually in new charitable contributions for tutoring, specialized services, and other learning resources. Advocates argue this creates a new pathway for generosity to directly benefit students across all learning environments. The initiative calls on community leaders, employers, educators, and parents to spread awareness and encourage contributions.

Why it matters

The tax credit could unlock billions for student support, addressing widespread dissatisfaction with K-12 education.
