New Eswatini ambassador vows to boost Taiwan's role in global bodies
Eswatini’s newly appointed ambassador to Taiwan, Vulindlela Simphiwe Kunene, pledged continued support for Taiwan’s participation in international organisations.
Vulindlela Simphiwe Kunene presented his credentials to President Lai Ching-te, announcing that Eswatini will persist in urging Taiwan’s inclusion in international organisations and mechanisms, especially on issues such as pandemics, cybercrime and supply-chain disruptions. He framed the support as both a gesture of friendship and a principled stance rooted in fairness and effective cooperation. Kunene cited Taiwan-backed rural electrification projects that have illuminated Eswatini’s countryside, and pledged expanded collaboration in trade, investment, renewable energy, agriculture, healthcare, digital transformation and artificial intelligence.
President Lai affirmed the durability of the bilateral relationship and expressed anticipation of King Mswati III’s visit to Taiwan soon. The two leaders also discussed ongoing projects like the Taiwan Industrial Innovation Park and broader cooperation in education and technology. Kunene hinted that the king may attend Taiwan’s Double Ten National Day celebrations later this week.
Why it matters
The pledge reinforces Taiwan’s diplomatic foothold and highlights Eswatini’s role in supporting its participation in global affairs.
