New Generation Robot Mowers Offer Reliable Cutting for Complex Yards

Recent tests of five high-end robot lawnmowers on a three-quarter-acre South Carolina yard show marked improvements in navigation and terrain handling, though occasional supervision is still needed.

Over a summer, five autonomous mowers were run on a flat, three-quarter-acre coastal property featuring centipede grass, sandy soil, and numerous trees. The Segway Navimow X430 emerged as the most capable, handling steep slopes, obstacles, and a closed gate without stopping, thanks to a blend of RTK, vSLAM, and vision systems. The Dreame A3 AWD Pro performed well without needing a clear sky view, using lidar and camera navigation, though it occasionally mis-identified completed areas.

Husqvarna’s Automower 420 IQ offered a long warranty and solid performance in a neighbor’s yard but relied on boundary wire for dead-zone navigation. Mammotion’s Luba 3 AWD combined three navigation methods but suffered from sharp turning that tore grass in wet spots. The budget Roborock RockNeo Q110H handled a simpler front lawn but struggled with large roots. Across all units, users must still monitor for obstacles, manage gate access, and consider the reliance on cloud-based NetRTK services.

Why it matters

Consumers can now choose more reliable robot mowers for difficult yards, but must still supervise them.
