New Geophysical Data Suggest Hidden Chambers Behind Tutankhamun’s Tomb
Researchers present geophysical evidence indicating possible undiscovered corridors beyond the burial chamber of Tutankhamun’s KV62 tomb.
Geophysical surveys conducted by a multinational team have revealed anomalies that may represent hidden passages behind the north wall of Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings. Lead archaeologist Mamdouh Eldamaty, together with structural engineer George Ballard of GBG Group, combined ground-penetrating radar from inside the tomb with a microgravity survey of over 1,200 readings across a 35-square-metre area. The data suggest a roughly 2-metre-wide corridor packed with rubble and a square high-density zone that could be a sealed chamber.
The researchers argue that earlier investigations missed these features because they focused on larger voids. If the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities approves, miniature drilling rigs equipped with cameras could be deployed as early as November to explore the space. The study, appearing in the Occasional Papers of the Amarna Royal Tombs Project, revives speculation that the tomb may conceal a complex predating Tutankhamun, possibly linked to Nefertiti.
