New German Series 'Blindspot Berlin' Revisits Failed Police Probe Before 2016 Terror Attack
German producers NEUESUPER and Beta Film released a trailer for the six-part series Blindspot Berlin, which dramatizes the botched police effort to infiltrate an Islamic extremist cell prior to the 2016 Christmas market massacre.
NEUESUPER and Beta Film have unveiled the trailer for Blindspot Berlin, a six-episode drama that reconstructs the unsuccessful police operation to penetrate an Islamic extremist network in the months leading up to the 2016 Berlin Christmas market attack. The narrative, set more than a year before the truck-ramming that killed 13 people, tracks Berlin police officer Isra (Bayan Layla) and investigator Frank (Albrecht Schuch) as they monitor Salafist preacher Abu Walaa, embed a source named Murat (Tamer Trasoglu) within the group, and issue internal alerts about a peripheral figure, Anis Amri, which are ultimately disregarded by the Federal Criminal Police Office and domestic intelligence.
The series also delves into personal pressures: Isra hides a family background that threatens her career, while Frank’s obsession strains his marriage. Directed and co-created by David Nawrath with David Marian, the cast includes Wael Alkhatib, Jeanne Goursaud, Bernd Hölscher and Sina Martins. Producer Simon Amberger emphasizes that the project seeks to present a thoughtful hypothesis about the failures without oversimplifying the still-sensitive case. Blindspot Berlin is a co-production with ARD Degeto Film, rbb, NDR and HR and will premiere at TIFF’s Primetime strand on Sept. 13.
