New Greens duo David Shoebridge and Steph Hodgins-May vie for party leadership

In the wake of Larissa Waters' unexpected resignation due to health concerns, Greens senators David Shoebridge and Steph Hodgins-May have launched a joint leadership ticket. Shoebridge, who entered federal politics from the NSW parliament in 2022 and leads the party on defence and AI issues, teams up with Hodgins-May, a two-year parliamentary veteran noted for her gas-tax activism and social-media outreach to younger voters.

Their platform emphasizes action on the climate crisis, fair resource returns, housing security and Australian independence from US influence. They will contest the leadership against veteran Green Mehreen Faruqi, current deputy leader Nick McKim, and possibly Sarah Hanson-Young, who is likely to run alone. The Greens are holding a two-day retreat in Sydney and plan to vote on the new leadership as early as mid-morning Wednesday.
