New legal term brings high-profile murder, drug and terrorism cases to Irish courts

Ireland’s courts open a new term with several headline cases, including a Co Louth triple-murder trial, the sentencing of Riad Bouchaker for attempted murder of children, and the appearance of alleged gang leader Daniel Kinahan.

The new law term begins on Tuesday with a heightened police presence at the Courts of Criminal Justice as a range of high-profile cases are scheduled. Robert O’Connor will face trial for the September 2025 killings of his mother, father and brother in Drumgowna, Co Louth, while James Leen is charged with importing and distributing crystal meth valued at over €13,000. Alleged crime-gang boss Daniel Kinahan is due before the non-jury Special Criminal Court on organised-crime charges dating from 2015-2017.

Riad Bouchaker, convicted of attempting to murder three children in Dublin in November 2023, will be sentenced for eight offences, including serious harm to a childcare worker. Former Irish soldier Lisa Smith’s appeal against her conviction for ISIS membership will be decided on October 6, and a judicial review of the new criminal legal-aid payment model is slated for October 13, highlighting ongoing strains on the justice system.
