New nonprofit offers support network for former MAGA supporters seeking to leave
Leaving Maga, a nonprofit founded in 2024, provides counseling, meet-ups and outreach to help people exit the Trump-aligned MAGA movement.
Leaving Maga, launched in 2024 by ex-MAGA operative Rich Logis, seeks to normalize departure from the Trump-driven right-wing movement by offering an "exit ramp" for former adherents and their loved ones. Inspired by Logis's own break after the 2022 Uvalde school shooting, the nonprofit runs weekly online support sessions for relatives, monthly in-person meet-ups for those who have left, a nationwide billboard campaign, and a media-literacy program to counter disinformation.
Participants like Stephania Messina describe their prior involvement as a religious-like psychosis and credit the group with restoring empathy and personal agency. The effort has attracted roughly half a million website visitors and operates in 27 states, with billboards displaying the message "Having doubts? You’re not alone." Leaving Maga does not aim to debate current MAGA supporters, focusing instead on healing, grief and rebuilding democratic values.
Why it matters
It demonstrates how structured support can help individuals disengage from extremist political groups and re-enter civic life.
