New Okinawa Governor Expected to Ease Japan’s Southwest Defense Expansion

The election of Genta Koja as Okinawa governor marks a political shift that may smooth Tokyo’s plan to reinforce the Nansei Islands, a strategic archipelago near Taiwan and the Senkaku Islands. Backed by the Liberal Democratic Party, Koja has already met Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and pledged to work with the central government, contrasting with his predecessor Denny Tamaki’s opposition to base expansions. The government intends to designate and upgrade airports and ports for Self-Defense Forces and Coast Guard use, extending runways, widening aprons and deepening docks to host fighter jets, transport aircraft and destroyers.

These upgrades could also serve commercial logistics and disaster response, though they may become targets in any conflict. Scholars say the change offers a chance for dialogue on security and infrastructure, aligning with the Defense Ministry’s SHIELD program that will rely on unmanned assets in the region. The move comes as China intensifies pressure around Taiwan and the Senkaku Islands, prompting Japan to bolster its Pacific posture before updating key security documents later this year.
