New opposition coalition schedules protest in Tunis over power and water shortages

The Nafis movement plans a demonstration in Tunis to denounce ongoing electricity rationing and water supply cuts.

The newly created Nafis movement, which seeks to unite parties and independents beyond Tunisia's traditional opposition, will hold a protest in Tunis on Thursday. The demonstration targets repeated electricity rationing and water-pumping interruptions that have left many citizens without basic services. Organisers also cite chronic shortages of essential medicines, soaring living expenses and high unemployment as grievances.

The utility cuts stem from record demand during extreme heat, with temperatures reaching up to 50 °C in parts of the country. The movement, launched in May, frames the protest as a response to what it calls government failure and injustice, echoing the spirit of the Arab Spring uprisings.

Why it matters

The protest reflects growing public frustration with basic service failures and could signal rising political pressure on President Kais Saied.
