New Oslo prison to replace current facility and become Norway's costliest

A new prison will be built on the site of the existing Oslo jail and is slated to open in the summer of 2031, making it the most expensive prison in Norway.

The government plans to construct a replacement prison on the same plot where the present Oslo prison stands. Officials announced that the first allocation for the project will appear in next year’s state budget, with additional start-up funding to be provided. When completed, the new complex will be the priciest correctional facility in the country. Construction is targeted for completion by the summer of 2031.

Why it matters

The project reshapes Norway's prison system and involves a significant public-sector investment.
