New pediatric operating block opens at Marie Curie Hospital with advanced facilities
A three-room surgical suite for emergency, orthopaedic and digestive endoscopy procedures was inaugurated at the Marie Curie Children’s Hospital, funded by the Inima Copiilor Association and Groupama.
On Monday, the Marie Sklodowska Curie Emergency Children’s Hospital opened a new operating block comprising three specialised theatres for emergency surgery, paediatric orthopaedics and digestive endoscopy, together with auxiliary rooms for pre-anaesthesia, recovery and staff support. The suite features high-performance air-treatment systems, automated lighting, a unified high-resolution video platform and secure live-streaming for remote expert consultation and training.
Funding came from the Inima Copiilor Association, which redirected a Groupama profit-tax donation to the project. Dr Radu Spătaru, a senior paediatric surgeon, highlighted the expected drop in surgical wait times and the enhanced safety for children. The inauguration was attended by the association’s founder and Groupama’s director. The launch was postponed because a ministerial order altered the legal framework for the rooms, prompting further technical work to meet the required sterility standards.

The upgraded facilities will improve surgical care and reduce wait times for thousands of children needing urgent procedures.
