New president pledges to keep doctors in the public health system

During the 2026 Malaysian Medical Association dinner, the newly appointed president outlined his commitment to preserving doctors within the public health sector. He noted that the country faces growing pressure on health services and a shortage of qualified staff. Citing the lengthy and costly training required for physicians, he stressed that the departure of seasoned doctors erodes both expertise and patient continuity.

The president dismissed the notion that boosting graduate numbers alone will address the issue, calling for improvements in career pathways, workplace conditions, professional growth opportunities, and future job security. He also referenced his past roles as chair of MMA Selangor, deputy honorary secretary of MMA for two terms, and chair of the National Private Medical Practitioners Division. The speech underscored a strategic focus on retaining talent rather than merely expanding the pipeline.
