New pro-Russia Serbian party emerges ahead of parliamentary elections
A newly formed Russian-Serbian unity party has entered the Serbian parliamentary race, positioning itself as a staunch ally of Moscow.
Ahead of Serbia's parliamentary elections, the Serbian-Russian Unity (SRSJ) party was launched, headed by Smederevo café proprietor and powerlifting champion Rade Savić. Savić promotes a platform of deeper Russian cooperation, a halt to EU accession negotiations, and the restoration of Kosovo to Serbia, alongside traditional family values and Orthodox faith. The party’s slogan emphasizes brotherly ties between Russians and Serbs.
It joins a field of eighteen parties, nine of which hold minority status, with two presenting themselves as Russian-aligned. Observers note that such “phantom lists” often appear shortly before elections to fragment opposition votes.
Why it matters
The party could influence Serbia's foreign alignment and election outcomes amid growing Russian influence.
