New prosecution and crime agencies expected to function smoothly by December
Minister Lim Ki-keun said the recently created Prosecution Service and Serious Crime Investigation Agency will be operating without problems by December despite early staffing and role issues.
During a parliamentary audit, Minister for Government Policy Coordination Lim Ki-keun reported that the Prosecution Service and the Serious Crime Investigation Agency, both established on Oct. 2 following President Lee Jae Myung's reform of the prosecution, are facing operational difficulties. The challenges stem from a lack of personnel and uncertainty over each agency's duties. Lim expressed regret for the inconvenience these problems have caused.
He emphasized that the government has been preparing to address the issues and expects the agencies to be fully functional by December. The minister pledged that the agencies will operate without further trouble once the adjustments are completed.
Why it matters
The reform aims to curb prosecutorial overreach, so the new agencies' successful launch is crucial for South Korea's justice system.
