New road bridge over the Tisza links Romania with Ukraine's Transcarpathia

A new road bridge spanning the Tisza River now connects Maramureș County in Romania with the Transcarpathian region of Ukraine, linking Sighetu Marmației and Bila Terkva.

A newly completed road bridge over the Tisza River now joins Romania’s Maramureș County with Ukraine’s Transcarpathian region, providing a direct link between Sighetu Marmației and Bila Terkva. The project received partial funding from the European Union, according to a statement from the European Commission Representation in Romania. Designed to handle both passenger and freight traffic, the bridge eliminates the weight restrictions that applied to the older single-lane crossing.

It features two parallel structures, each with two traffic lanes, plus dedicated pathways for pedestrians and cyclists. Modern border facilities include separate processing lanes for travelers and cargo, as well as document-control booths on each side. Authorities highlight the bridge’s role in the “Solidarity Corridors” programme, expecting it to strengthen economic ties and create new opportunities for businesses and residents on both banks of the river.

Why it matters

The bridge enhances cross-border trade and mobility, supporting regional economies and EU connectivity initiatives.
