New Route 1212 Bridge Opens in Damascus After Hurricane Helene Reconstruction

On September 1, the Virginia Department of Transportation opened the new Route 1212 bridge spanning Laurel Creek in Damascus, marking the final bridge project in the Bristol District’s Hurricane Helene recovery. The 2024 storm had ripped the original concrete bridge from its footing and sent it toward the creek’s shore, illustrating the event’s extreme force. Across Southwest Virginia, more than 500 locations required repair, with 394 structures—including bridges and culverts—affected and an overall repair bill of $195.5 million.

Five bridges, including the Route 1212 span, were fully replaced, alongside four culverts. Although the bridge is operational, construction crews continue work around the site, and drivers are advised to proceed with caution. The opening symbolizes a key step toward restoring regional transportation links after one of the area’s most damaging storms.
