New Syrian Textbooks Emphasize Islamist Ideology and Jihadist Heroes

A study released Monday finds that Syria’s post-Assad school curriculum is dominated by Islamic content that glorifies jihad, martyrdom and extremist figures.

IMPACT-se’s latest report, based on a review of 130 Syrian textbooks used from primary to secondary levels, says the post-Assad curriculum is heavily infused with Islamist doctrine. Texts glorify jihad and martyrdom, present Jews through hostile stereotypes, and reject Israel’s legitimacy while praising Palestinian resistance. Historical figures linked to Hamas’s military wing and a 1978 Israeli massacre are portrayed as heroes, and scientific topics like evolution are excluded.

Minority communities such as Kurds, Turkmen and Druze receive no mention, and female dress codes are tightened to Salafi standards. The study highlights the shift from a secular, pan-Arab narrative to one that aligns with one outlet leader’s extremist background. IMPACT-se chief Marcus Sheff urged international leaders to view the curriculum as a warning sign for regional peace efforts.

Why it matters

The curriculum shapes future generations, influencing Syria’s social outlook and regional stability.
