New UK farming minister reportedly faints inside meat storage facility

Stephen Morgan, the junior farming minister in Andy Burnham's cabinet, is said to have lost consciousness while touring a refrigerated meat room in the Lake District.

Stephen Morgan, serving as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in the new Andy Burnham administration, reportedly fainted while being shown a refrigerated storage area filled with meat at a processing plant in the Lake District, Cumbria. According to a farmer present, Morgan was shown large cuts of beef and steaks before he said he felt unwell and needed a moment.

Morgan later explained that the abrupt change from outdoor heat to the cold locker caused his discomfort and expressed gratitude toward the plant workers. His lack of direct farming background has already drawn scrutiny since his appointment, as noted by the trade journal Scottish Farmer. The episode occurs as Prime Minister Burnham seeks to rebuild trust with farmers after previous tensions under former Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, whose policies had sparked large tractor protests. Critics argue that the minister's unfamiliarity with the sector could hinder the government's efforts to mend relations with the countryside.

Why it matters

The incident highlights concerns about the new minister's suitability for a role critical to Britain's food supply and farmer relations.
