New UK programme trains dentists and GPs to recognise early motor neurone disease signs
A charity-led initiative called RACE to Diagnose is offering specialised training to dentists and general practitioners across the UK to spot early indicators of motor neurone disease.
The My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, created by late Scotland rugby star Doddie Weir, has introduced RACE to Diagnose, a pioneering UK programme that provides dentists and general practitioners with targeted instruction on identifying early motor neurone disease (MND) signs. Participants learn to recognise subtle cues like progressive muscle wasting, weakness, or alterations in speech, tongue function and swallowing, and receive guidance on how to refer patients urgently while managing patient anxiety.
Jessica Lee, director of research at the foundation, highlighted that MND’s rarity and variable early presentation often delay specialist referral. The effort aims to enable earlier treatment initiation and entry into clinical trials, as well as give patients and families more time to plan care and adapt their lives. Former NHS consultant Andy Vaughton, diagnosed with MND in 2021 after years of missed signs, underscored the personal impact of diagnostic delays and supported the need for faster identification.
