New Wolverine game breaks from X-Men canon with original storyline
Insomniac unveiled a Wolverine-centered PS5 title that drops the hero from the X-Men roster and introduces fresh allies and foes.
Insomniac announced a Wolverine-focused action game for the PlayStation 5, scheduled to launch on September 15, that abandons the traditional X-Men setting. The story follows Logan as he joins a covert unit called Team X, featuring familiar antagonists such as Mystique and Sabretooth, and pits them against the mutant-hunting scientist Bolivar Trask. Early gameplay shows a memory-wiped Logan navigating a wilderness, a narrative choice meant to distance the character from Hugh Jackman's iconic film version.
Australian actor Liam McIntyre provides the voice, and narrative director Walt Williams said the plot explores Logan’s yearning for connection through a budding romance with Jean Grey and guidance from Dr. Nathaniel Essex, aka Mister Sinister. The game emphasizes visceral combat with haptic feedback and has earned an ESRB M rating for mature content.
Why it matters
The game offers a fresh take on a popular hero, potentially attracting both gamers and comic fans.
