New Yalu River Bridge poised for October 2026 opening as staff and trucks line up
Chinese workers have resumed daily shifts and North Korean trucks are on standby, suggesting the New Yalu River Bridge will open in October 2026.
Following China’s Golden Week holiday, staff at the Dandong side of the New Yalu River Bridge started daily shifts on Oct. 8, indicating operational readiness. North Korean officials have serviced several dozen freight trucks that are now waiting to transport cargo as soon as the bridge opens. The inauguration, originally planned for Oct. 6 to mark the anniversary of China-North Korea diplomatic ties, is now being eyed for Oct. 15, with some traders attributing the shift to a recent DMZ landmine explosion and a North Korean missile launch.
No official source has confirmed a direct connection between the delay and security concerns, but the timing reflects heightened regional sensitivity. The 3-kilometre cable-stayed bridge, financed by China and completed in 2014, aims to ease traffic on the aging Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge and expand bilateral trade between Dandong and Sinuiju. Its opening could significantly alter logistics, customs procedures, and trade flows across the border.
Why it matters
The bridge’s opening will shift trade routes and boost economic activity between China and North Korea.
