New York Archdiocese Nears $800 Million Settlement to Resolve Abuse Claims

Representatives of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York and lawyers for about 1,300 abuse survivors are in settlement talks that could exceed $800 million. The proposed agreement would offer each survivor a minimum lump‑sum of $250,000, with the possibility of higher compensation after individual assessments. An additional $20 million from the archdiocese’s insurer has been secured to distribute among a small group of claimants who argued the offer fell short.

The deal also obliges the archdiocese to list all credibly accused clergy and lay leaders online and keep the roster updated. Both sides remain engaged in negotiations as they seek to resolve the lawsuits and stabilize the archdiocese’s finances.
