New York expands winter utility aid, offering up to $500 discounts

New York’s Energy Affordability Program has been expanded to help low- and moderate-income households manage higher winter utility costs. Governor Kathy Hochul highlighted that about 2.5 million eligible residents are still missing out on the benefit, which can reduce monthly electric and gas bills by as much as $500. The program’s discount amount varies with household income and size, with specific thresholds for Con Edison, National Grid Metro, National Grid Long Island, and other utilities across the state.
Interested families can enroll via their utility company or the NY.gov/EAP website. To date, roughly one million New Yorkers have enrolled, leaving millions more who could qualify for the assistance.
