New York Governor Hochul says DHS is holding back $87 million in counterterror funds

During a Tuesday press conference, Governor Kathy Hochul asserted that the Department of Homeland Security is keeping back 40% of New York's counterterrorism budget, which she said totals $87 million. She framed the withholding as a political move that undermines police funding and public safety. Hochul appealed to the president, demanding the release of the money to honor families of past terror victims and to protect first responders.

She emphasized that the funds are essential for maintaining twelve bomb squads, ensuring FDNY internal communications during crises, and preparing for potential radiological threats. The governor warned that without the federal contribution, New York would bear the burden alone. Officials from the White House and DHS were contacted for comment.
