New York rolls out discounts to win back Canadian tourists amid tariff fallout

President Donald Trump's proposal of 50% tariffs and rhetoric about annexing Canada have strained cross-border relations, resulting in a 26% decline in Canadian visits to New York State and a 28% drop in spending in 2025. To counter the downturn, New York's Department of Economic Development and New York City Tourism + Conventions unveiled two campaigns - "Northern Neighbour Deal" and "NY LOVES CANADA." The former provides a 30% discount at roughly 100 venues across Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn and The Bronx, covering observation decks, shows, restaurants and hotels, while the latter extends discounts to 25 locations statewide, including the Hudson Valley and Adirondacks, with some offers lasting until year-end.

Governor Kathy Hochul emphasized the measures as a gesture of friendship, noting the shared geographic destiny. The promotions run from August 18 to September 7 in the city, with select deals continuing later. Similar discount initiatives have appeared in Las Vegas, aiming to mitigate the impact of the trade dispute on tourism revenue.
