New Zealand approves $1.6 billion purchase of five Navy Seahawk helicopters

New Zealand has signed a $1.6 billion agreement with the United States to acquire five Seahawk naval helicopters equipped with anti-submarine torpedoes and air-surface missiles.

New Zealand has finalized a $1.6 billion contract with the US government to buy five Seahawk naval helicopters, each armed with anti-submarine torpedoes and air-surface missiles. The agreement, approved under the Defence Capability Plan, follows months of NZDF evaluation and was confirmed through the US Foreign Military Sale process in June. The aircraft, produced by a Lockheed Martin subsidiary, are scheduled to arrive beginning in 2030 at Whenuapai air base, where infrastructure upgrades will be needed.

The NZDF expects the new helicopters to outperform the older fleet in speed and range, enhancing the navy's combat and surveillance capabilities. Annual operating expenses will rise by $110 million, and the government may later add compatible drones to the platform. The choice mirrors Australia’s existing Seahawk fleet, supporting regional interoperability.

Why it matters

The purchase modernises New Zealand's naval air power, strengthening regional security and defence cooperation.
