New Zealand fuel prices surge as Middle East tensions and market factors tighten supply
Petrol prices in New Zealand have risen above $3 per litre, driven by higher crude oil costs, refining and shipping expenses, and a weaker NZ dollar.
New Zealand motorists are now paying over $3 a litre for petrol as global oil prices rebound above US$100 a barrel, a reversal from a brief lull when cease-fire hopes eased Middle East shipping. Westpac chief economist Kelly Eckhold explained that renewed Iranian demands and uncertainty over the Strait of Hormuz have pushed crude higher, while refining margins remain unusually steep. AA spokesperson Terry Collins added that insurance premiums for tankers have surged, with some rates rising nearly tenfold, adding to shipping costs.
The local exchange rate, which has slipped from about US$0.60 to US$0.56, further inflates the NZ dollar price after conversion. Although some analysts think the worst may be over, Infometrics' Gareth Kiernan cautions that stronger Chinese demand and lingering market volatility could sustain upward pressure, especially for diesel, which faces tighter global inventories.
